New Horizons for Schools

A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. These partnerships are formed with the goal of improving student learning and strengthening the relationship between students and their community. Community members – first of all parents, but also people with specific skills and expertise – are invited to participate, deepening the curriculum by making it locally relevant and applicable.

In 2016, New Horizons Foundation began offering the Community Schools program to promote the concept of community schools and support Romanian schools in transitioning to this model. Through our project we offer training courses, facilitation, and financial support to school leaders at selected schools as they progress through the stages of helping their school become truly interconnected with the community. We hope that this project will serve as an example that will eventually change public perception about the role of schools all throughout the Romanian educational system.

How are community schools different from other schools?

“Most people think of schools today as serving a single purpose, like a traditional telephone, with a single role: teachers teach and students learn. Community schools are more akin to smartphones. Schools and communities connect, collaborate, and create. Children and families have an array of supports from community partners right at their school. Communities and schools leverage their shared physical and human assets to help kids succeed. Community schools host a wide variety of applications, opportunities and supports that give students, parents, and community members all the tools they need to learn and grow.”

Objectives of our Community Schools Project

Build a network of community schools in Romania through the selection and support of an initial nucleus of 30 pilot schools.

Develop the capacity of those 30 schools to self-evaluate and predict institutional development using the international quality standards for community schools.

Develop the internal capacity of New Horizons Foundation to support and promote the mission of community schools across Romania.

Disseminate information, conduct advocacy efforts, develop partnerships, and participate in international networks of community schools.

This project is being implemented with support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and other financial sponsors.
